STUDENTS MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN OUR COMMUNITY
Las Vegas, March 3 --- The Dr. Miriam and Sheldon G. Adelson Educational Campus is an independent, not-for-profit, Preschool-12th grade day school located in Las Vegas. Since 1980, they have inspired their students to be lifelong learners with a sense of responsibility to the local, national and global communities. Beyond the classrooms, theater, labs and playing fields, The Adelson Educational Campus is a caring community partner.
As a school that draws strength from Jewish heritage and traditions, The Adelson Campus refers to acts of service as Tikkun Olam, or fixing our broken world. Integrated into everything the school does is the concept of teaching children to live up to their potential, work to be moral and ethical people, create a kind and caring community, and performing the act of Tzedakah or the giving of charity.
This starts from the ground up at the school-wide level. As an institution, The Adelson Educational Campus provides more than $1 million a year in need-based financial aid covering over 25% of the student body.
The Adelson Educational Campus also provides a home in the Summerlin community as a partner to many arts and enrichment organizations. The campus has welcomed Nobel Prize Winners Eli Weizel and Natan Sharansky, The Independent Jewish Film Festival, The Las Vegas Philharmonic, The Yale Wiffenpoofs, as well as numerous community theater groups, acclaimed authors, Holocaust Survivors, actors and historians.
Unlike singular community service projects around holidays, The Adelson Educational Campus’ comprehensive community service programs make a lasting impression on their students and help them understand that there are needs in our community year-round. Their community service projects reach the local, state and international community.
The following is a snapshot of some of their community service projects:
Haitian Efforts: The students raised over $9000 to help the victims of the Haitian earthquake. Each grade’s projects were tailored to the age level of the students, all with the underlying theme that students shouldn’t just ask for money from their parents, rather they should ask how they can earn it. This has empowered our students and helped them truly feel like they can make a difference in the life of suffering individuals.
Canstruction® Teams of architects, engineers, and students built a giant structure made entirely from full cans of food. After being exhibited, all of the canned food used in the structures was donated to local food banks.
Environmental and Social Welfare Projects: Each year, the Middle School and Upper School students participate in environmental and social welfare projects both internationally and throughout the United States. The students hold fundraisers, such as our upcoming community yard sale, to help offset the travel expenses. This ensures all of the students, regardless of their financial situation, can give back to others in need.
Local Initiatives: Local projects that The Adelson Educational Campus’ students have been involved in this year include:
- donating over 3000 pounds of food to local food banks throughout Las Vegas;
- providing a complete Thanksgiving dinner to 40 local families;
- providing holiday gifts including bikes, games and electronics to local families throughout the Las Vegas Valley;
- Keeping it Warm - our 5th annual winter clothing drive donating items to shelters all over Las Vegas;
- donating thousands of dental care supplies to Shade Tree;
- working with seniors at Adult Day Care Centers of Las Vegas; and
- working with students with developmental challenges at Helen J. Stewart School.
