5th grade Ilan Ramon Chemical Garden:
Our fifth-grade students commemorated the life of Israeli astronaut, Ilan Ramon, who died tragically on February 1, 2003 aboard the Columbia Space Shuttle as it made its way back to Earth by making Chemical Gardens. Our students are fascinated with chemical reactions and this proved to be a highlight of our school year so far.
Making a chemical garden was one of the experiments Ilan Ramon conducted in space. The difference in gravity produced interesting results. Our young Adelson scientists loved dropping a variety of metal salts into a mixture of diluted water glass (sodium silicate). Because of their buoyancy, the crystals quickly rose to create beautiful plant-like tentacles resembling a colorful garden.
Fifth graders also created a slideshow/reflection to help them remember Ilan Ramon’s life, mission, and legacy. They included pictures of their beautiful gardens and documented the process of the science investigation. We lost Ilan Ramon too soon. Lower School honored Col. Ramon this year by naming our STEAM challenge after him. It is interesting to note that Ilan Ramon brought a mini Torah he received from a Holocaust survivor, a kiddush cup, and a drawing of earth as it would be seen from the moon, drawn by a child while in a death camp with him into space for this historic mission. We dedicate the Chemical Gardens we made to Ilan Ramon in honor of his bravery and Jewish pride. We will forever remember him.
Lower School Student Council
The Lower School Student Council has been hard at work to build a sense of community among all the classes in the Lower School. These students have taken on the challenge of being school leaders with enthusiasm and dedication. They have led the lower school in planning and making flyers for special events focused on Tikkun Olam such as the Dreidel Spin Off, the 100th Day of School Canned Food Drive. Most recently, they have and even the upcoming Crazy Hair and Sock Day for Adar! They have recently helped generate ideas for safe and fun new Purim activities that classes can enjoy together in their own cohorts. Last month, as a group of student leaders, they had the opportunity to honor Martin Luther King Jr. by creating a video about what it means to be a great leader and work for what you believe in. We are thrilled with how this amazing group works together and can't wait to see what else they accomplish!
