Rosh Chodesh Challah Bake!

Thursday, September 27, 2018
In the spirit of this year’s COMMUNITY, CARING & CONNECTION theme, Lower School grades K through 5 will celebrate Rosh Chodesh each month with a fun challah bake directly following Kabbalat Shabbat – on Shabbat Mevarchim. The next Rosh Chodesh Challah Bake will be on Friday, October 5th.
The Jewish calendar is rooted in the cycles of the moon. Rosh Chodesh means the head of the new month and is the start of the new lunar month. The Shabbat before the start of the new month is known as Shabbat Mevarchim – at which time a special blessing is recited marking the new month. The Jewish nation is often compared to the moon. Throughout history, their light has waxed and waned but has never been extinguished, thus the celebration of each new moon.
Families are invited to sponsor the Rosh Chodesh Challah Bakes for their child’s grade for a $36 donation. This sponsorship opportunity is a wonderful way to recognize a birthday, a grandparent’s visit, an anniversary, a newborn in the family, or any occasion your child will enjoy celebrating with his or her grade.
Multiple families are welcome to sponsor each grade. Anyone feeling especially celebratory can sponsor all six grades for $180. Each sponsor-family’s name will be announced during Kabbalat Shabbat Mevarchim and in the Friday Newsletter in appreciation for their contribution and in recognition of the occasion being celebrated.
2nd grader Reuben Schwartz and the Schwartz family will sponsor the upcoming Rosh Chodesh Challah Bake on Friday, October 5th in honor of Reuben’s 8th birthday. Additional families are welcome to sponsor the 2nd grade as well as the other lower school grades.
