This Week in Lower School 10/22-10/25, 2018

Today, our second graders presented their floor plan designs for a doll house project in art class. The students were surprised by a special guest to help give advice and positive feedback. That guest was Jon Sparer, the current president of AIA (American Institute of Architects) Nevada.
Lower School students are excited to light our Hanukkiah while bringing light to others! The 5th graders are leading us in raising funds for Make a Wish of Southern Nevada to grant a child her wish. Students are raising money by donating $5 for a star to fill our giant Hanukkiah. This is the second year that our school has participated and volunteered with Make a Wish Foundation, and we are excited to do even more in fulfilling a special wish for a “Wish Kid.” Students may donate a minimum $5 for a star and they will add it to the Hanukkiah that is located in the theater lobby. Each grade level has a designated candle and once 100% participation in the grade is met, the candle at the top of that grade’s section will be “lit.” Please be the light in another’s life by donating a star.
*Money should be sent to the homeroom teachers
**Donations larger than $5 are welcome too
On Monday, our Kindergarten enjoyed a wonderful field trip to Spring Mtn. Ranch. The students had the opportunity to learn about different animals and vegetation by going on a nature hike led by a park ranger. The children were able to see cows, donkeys, a Mountain Bluebird, and learned about sheep, goats, and snakes. The ranger also taught the kids about the different species of plants that the animals and early settlers survived on when the area was first inhabited. We toured the historic ranch house that was home to many important figures in Nevada and saw the different types of furniture and ways people lived in homes in the 1940’s. The children also toured the first structures that were constructed in the late 1800’s in the area. The children learned about how the very first settlers made everything by hand including their homes. We concluded the field trip with nice picnic lunch and enjoyed the fresh brisk air.
Lower School students had the opportunity to do herb planting during recess on Thursday. They had the option to take their planted seed cups home or keep them at school. If the students chose to keep them at school, they will care for them during recess until they reach the maturation point to where they can be transplanted. They will transplant their herbs to the garden for the entire lower school to enjoy. The herbs planted were sage, thyme, cilantro, parsley, basil, oregano, lavender, tarragon, and catnip.
