This Week in Lower School 10/3-10/5, 2018
Lower School Team
Friday, October 5, 2018
On Simchat Torah we celebrated the completion of reading the Torah and beginning reading it all over again. This week we learned about the days of creation. Kindergarten learned what was created each day and made a mobile of the seven days of creation. First grade made a book of creation in Hebrew.. Second grade discussed the opportunities we have to be thankful for everything that was created. Third grade explored the connection of the Kiddush cup to this this week’s Torah portion, they learned that a part of the Friday night Kiddush is written in this portion and it talks about how God created something the first 6 days and rested- Shavat (striked) on the 7th day. Fifth graders discussed how we continue to take care of the world that was created.
Our students and staff are excited to be back to full schedule! The full schedule brings more exciting opportunities to the Lower School: we are gearing up to start the morning enrichment courses, and we kicked off the election process for Students Council for grades 3-5. We will vote for our new council on election day.
We are also spending more time outdoors in our wonderful garden and on field trips. The cooler weather has allowed for some of our students to work and learn in our school garden. Students from Jr. Kindergarten to 2nd grade had the opportunity to work with our farmer from Garden Farms during their recess on Thursday. They learned how to harvest green beans, eggplant, okra, and banana peppers. They also learned how to clear plants that are out of season and to make space for new planting. Parents, please send a sweater to keep in school in case it is cooler outdoors or indoors.
K - 5 students had the opportunity to braid challah for Rosh Chodesh. They will continue to braid challah each Rosh Chodesh throughout the school year. It is a really fun time for our students and teachers, as the children can express their own creativity in how they braid their challah dough while celebrating the beginning of the new Jewish month. We would like to thank our Challah sponsors for this week. For 2nd grade, the Schwartz family donated in honor of their son Rueben’s birthday. For 1st grade, the Ravizza family donated in honor of their daughter Ambra.
