This Week in Lower School 1/14-1/18, 2019

Friday, January 18, 2019
On Wednesday our 5th graders took a joint field trip with our 6th grade to Camp Potosi Pines. This was a wonderful opportunity for our two divisions to come together for a great day of activities.  Our students enjoyed a multitude of team building and Tu B‘ Shvat activities. They participated in archery, art, shelter building, sports and games, and reflection exercises. Thank you to the 6th grade for an amazing day on the mountain.  View Photos
Our 5th graders are looking forward to more activities with 6th grade students and staff as they get ready to transition to Middle School.

Tu B’ Shvat Seders
This week Lower School students celebrated Tu B'Shevat, the 15th day of Shevat on the Jewish calendar, which is the day that marks the beginning of a “new year” for trees.  At this time in Israel, fruit bearing trees wake from their sleep and begin to bloom, thus commencing their cycle of growing fruit.  It is very common to plant trees or collect money to have trees planted in Israel. On Tu B’Shevat there is a custom of eating some of the seven species, described in the Torah as growing abundantly in Israel.  These foods are: wheat, barley, grapes, figs, pomegranates, olives, and dates. Our students had the opportunity to try some of the traditional Tu B’Shevat seder foods during their class seders. Students recited the blessing, enjoyed the food and played bingo, Kahoot and other quiz games related to Tu B’shvat to enhance their knowledge. Thank you PTO for preparing the fruit trays for the classrooms.

Clubs
3rd quarter clubs started on Tuesday. Our 3rd - 5th grade students are enjoying basketball, gardening, dance, sewing, yearbook, and Israel club. Clubs occur each Tuesday for the duration of each quarter. This is another opportunity for our students to experience new activities led by our amazing staff members and to expand the circle of friends as they are teamed with students from other grades.

MLK Shabbat
To honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday this Monday, all of 5th grade, created a video and wrote an “I Am” poem through the perspective of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to present at Shabbat. Given that their driving question for their study of American History is: “When should one question authority”, students made poignant connections between the injustices citizens experienced during both the  Revolutionary War and the Civil Rights Movement.

Watch the Video made by fifth graders to present the connection of civil rights, justice, equality and the students’ lives.

100th Day of School
