This Week in Lower School 12/4-12/8, 2017

Have you noticed a nip in the air? Winter is really settling in, just in time for Hanukkah and the new year! As the seasons transition, our students are getting ready for their own transitions.

Fifth graders took their first step towards becoming middle schoolers during their Shadow Day. Our students attended a day of middle school, experiencing many classes and events during their time there. In addition to attending classes with the 6th grade, they joined the Middle School Town Hall meeting. They enjoyed being part of school news and decisions in a hands-on manner. Particularly popular was Ms. Garrett's science class where students learned about minerals and even had the opportunity to meet Geo the Bearded Dragon!  During English class, students experienced journaling and learned about the 6 Essential Elements of Middle School; including prioritizing and decision making. It was great to learn with middle school teachers and to get familiar with some of the classes and experiences of middle school.  Visiting Middle School enabled the fifth graders to have some new experiences. Fifth grade is designed to be a transitional year, so our students are already familiar with some things they saw in the Middle School format.  In the Lower School our 5th graders are already using lockers, having subject-based teachers, taking band, and joining clubs. During periods like lunch, PE, clubs, and extracurricular sports, they are getting the chance to work with their 6th grade peers. This helps create enriched peer relationships and broadens their social circle with the students they will work alongside next year.  Our students are becoming proficient with laptops, Google Classroom, and the Startup Incubator. Their current leadership roles in the Lower School and learning opportunities are getting them ready to become Adelson Middle Schoolers.

Fifth grade isn’t the only class getting a taste of next year: on January17th, we are excited to invite junior kindergarten families to our From Cubs to Lions Event. Families will learn about our kindergarten program, meet the kindergarten team, and participate in a Q & A session. Babysitting is available for the event, but you must RSVP with Ms. Natalie (natalie.cameron@adelsoncampus.org). Our JK classes will join with our kindergarten for the 100th day of school events and other exciting celebrations. JK students and parents are invited to K- 5th grade Tu B’Shvat Shabbat on January 27th at 8:00 AM

As the seasons change, so do our kids! It is so exciting to see them grow and develop. A quick reminder to make sure that your children are layered and bundled up for the cold weather: it’s chilly out there! Jackets, pants, leggings, tights, gloves, and hats are all important! Don’t forget to label each item with your child’s name.
