100th Day of School Event + Food Drive
The 100th Day of school is highlighted by our annual canned food drive. We challenged each class to collect 100 food items to be donated to local food pantries. Along with this component of Tikkun Olam there are many other opportunities for our students to learn with the 100th day of school. Our Junior Kindergarten and Kindergarten students teamed up for their annual 100th day of school event. They participated in math centered stations which included movement, sensory play, dancing, tracing 100 hands,  skip counting by 10 to 100 hopscotch, holding 100 orbeez, counting to 100 in Hebrew and English, estimating 100 jelly beans in a jar, and counting their 100+ cans of food to be donated.
A huge thank you to all of our families in the Lower School who donated 2,562 food items this year. Many classes surpassed the challenge of collecting 100 cans per class. Our students will continue with this Tikkun Olam project as they will be responsible for packing all of the goods in preparation for donation to Aishel Avraham and JFSA during Purim.

Field Trip to Smith Center
Our 3rd - 5th grade students had the wonderful opportunity to attend Miss Nelson has a Field Day at The Smith Center. The play continues the theme that our students had last week about growth mindset from the NED assembly. The play takes place at Smedley High School were the Smedley Tornadoes have never won a football game. In fact, they have never even scored a single point. With such a poor record and a team that is out of control, kind-hearted Miss Nelson comes to the rescue when she enlists the help of her alter ego, the ill-tempered Miss Viola Swamp, to coach the team and whip them into shape. Our students had a great experience.

Illan Ramon Chemical Garden
This week our fifth and sixth-grade students commemorated the life of Israeli astronaut, Ilan Ramon, who died tragically on February 1, 2003 aboard the Columbia Space Shuttle as it made its way back to Earth. Adelson sixth graders mentored the fifth graders on how to create a chemical garden, which was one of the experiments Ilan Ramon conducted in space. Sixth graders also created a slideshow presentation to help fifth-grade students learn more about Ilan Ramon’s life, mission, and legacy. To stay connected to Israel and Judaism, Ilan Ramon brought a mini Torah he received from a Holocaust survivor, a kiddush cup, and a drawing of earth as it would be seen from the moon, drawn by a child while in a death camp. We dedicate the chemical gardens we made today to Ilan Ramon in honor of his bravery and Jewish pride
