This Week in Lower School 1/30 - 2/3, 2017

This Wednesday we celebrated the 100th Day of School! Classes chose to acknowledge the day in different ways.  Some classes counted out and stacked 100 cups to see how tall a tower they would make.  Others imagined what they would be doing when they were 100 years old.  These students drew pictures of their 100 year old selves and wrote a sentence about the activities they would be participating in at that age.  Junior kindergarten students used multiple learning modalities to create gumball machines filled with ten different color gumballs in groups of ten.  They counted out ten groups of ten using dot paints, utilizing their math and art skills and wrote a sentence about the 100th day of school, practicing their printing skills.  Our students explored the number 100 in various ways.  They determined that 100 grains of sand doesn’t look the same as 100 elephants.  They discovered that 100 feathers did not weigh the same as 100 marbles.

In honor of the day, our students collected hundreds of cans, boxes and bags of food that were put in a common place so that all our classes could use the items to count, group and sort.  Once the items were sorted for educational purposes, they were donated to Gershon’s charity organization, which helps to feed disadvantaged families in our community.  This morning at kabbalat Shabbat, Gershon was presented with all the food we collected.  We were moved to hear one of our parents, Dr. Harouni, describe the humbling experience of volunteering for this organization. There are easy ways for the whole family to participate in packing and delivering the food. If you are interested in helping you can click here.
