This Week in Lower School 1/7-1/11, 2019

Friday, January 11, 2019
We were so happy to see all our friends back from Winter Break and we are off to a great start to the second semester. We are fortunate to grow our school during the second semester. We welcomed our new Baby Pandas class, our new students who transferred from the Schechter school, and even students from NJ and LA - welcome to AEC!
At AEC we believe that education is not just about academics, but is about supporting our students in their journey in becoming good people- mensches- who care about others, and reach out a helping hand when needed. Jewish values guide our school, and today was a wonderful example of how we live by our values: our Student Council elected officers, as well as the students who ran for office but were not elected, prepared a warm welcome to our new students as they arrived to school this morning. They welcomed them with signs and gifts and showed them to their new classrooms. They continued to assist during lunch, recess and even in carline rooms. They created a wonderful atmosphere to welcome new friends to our AEC family- Kol Hakavod!!
Eliana Light was our special guest singer during our Shabbat celebration this week. Eliana is an author, founded The G!D Project, and is the recipient of the Jewish Education Young Pioneers award in 2017. She sang in all three Shabbat celebrations this morning and led us into shabbat in a fun and festive way. Thank you Eliana!  VIEW PHOTOS
CSI Club prepared a crime scene investigation experience for our 2nd graders. Our young agents were challenged to find out “Who Borrowed Mr. Bear.” This was another example of experiential education, leadership, working together, and real life application. Mr. Todd, our Chief of Security and former police officer, spoke to the children about how investigators use science to solve crimes. A big thank you to Mrs. Garner and the CSI Club for this exciting experience for our 2nd-grade classes.
On Wednesday, club members lead 2nd graders through a prepared crime scene and challenged them to observe it closely for clues. Then they presented the back story as a readers’ theater. On Thursday, club members prepared and lead 2nd graders through ten forensic science labs and encouraged them to record their results on their suspect boards. Everyone had a great time using their science and higher-level thinking skills to piece together and solve this fun mystery. VIEW PHOTOS
