This Week in Lower School 1/9 - 1/13, 2017

Friday, January 13, 2017

Welcome back!  Upon their return to school, our preschool students were greeted by a large, cheery snowman.  What a way to start a winter week! Our youngest students created snow globes, played with snow that they made in class, matched mittens, read The Mitten, by Jan Brett, and wrote about snowmen.  They dressed in winter jackets and noticed the difference in how warm our coats kept them, compared with their regular indoor clothing. We got to wear our winter coats during recess on some days, while others we had to stay in.  We love the winter but look forward to seeing the sun again soon.
Our first grade students began their unit on Penguins and other animals that live in cold weather climates.  They are excited to invite their parents to their Penguin Exhibit on Friday, 2/24 at 8:45am, so mark your calendars.
On Friday we concluded our learning about Martin Luther king and his legacy by watching this video and discussed how we, as individuals need to take responsibility of repairing the world (doing Tikkun Olam). We were inspired by a famous Israeli song- Ani Ve’ata Neshane Et Ha’olam: the change starts with individuals and then others will follow, a change is not an easy thing but we have to persevere.

We are looking forward to the kick off of the Tikkun Olam projects that are led by our 5th graders. Each grade will be involved in acts of service to make the world a better place. We foster this value and are honored to be working with such dedicated 5th grade students and teachers to make this a reality.

We are so excited to begin a new marking period. The start of the new session brings more offerings for our students.  Our fourth graders have the opportunity to participate in Art Club during lunch one day a week.   Fifth graders were thrilled with chance to join middle school clubs.  Project Beyond Junior Prep workshops opened for second through fourth graders this week. Casting workshop and rehearsals for Jungle Book JR. started as well – what an amazing response from students and faculty. We look forward to this exciting show which allow so many of our students shine on and off the stage. Casting list will be shared by Wednesday to parents and students. There will be a parent meeting for the show. Date TBD.

Enrichments began this week.  We have nearly 100 students signed up for 18 different activities!  There is still space available in some of our enrichment classes.  If you would like to sign up, please contact Melissa Frome in the Lower School by 1/20/17.
