Oh! The Places You’ll Go... When You Read a Good Book!
Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss, and Happy Nevada Reading Week!
This week in the library, Lower School students had the opportunity to pet, snuggle, and read with the spunky collection of schnauzers, cockapoos, Chocolate Labs, Bichons, and Shih Tzus (among others!) that we invited into our school. Popular titles shared with our canine reading buddies were Green Eggs and Ham, One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish, Mercer Mayer’s little critter books, Dog Heroes, and Laura Numeroff’s If You Give a Moose a Muffin. While in the library, several students also recorded conversations about their experiences reading for the dogs, and these recordings will be a part of our second Library Lions podcast of the year.
In tech, students designed bookmarks with Ms. Ziter. In art, with Ms. Levy, they created awesome tissue-paper and cardboard bonfires which we used for this Friday’s “S’mores and Stories Around the Campfire” event. In their classrooms, students have participated in Dr. Seuss themed activities and lessons, all in celebration of reading. We’ve also paired up grade levels within the entire school for reading buddy sessions throughout the week. We were lucky enough to host local author Bill Greenberg, who presented his Storytime Magic series to our JK-4th grades.
To finish up the week, our 2nd and 3rd graders took field trips to the Summerlin Library and heard from one final guest author, Luke Anderson, creator of the Hockey Penguin series. Our entire student body has been bringing in used books all week to donate to Spread the Word Nevada and we have three large boxes spilling over with donations. Thank you to all of the teachers and administrators who have worked tirelessly to make this great week of reading possible. Thank you to the parents for helping our students with dress days and for reading in the classrooms. Families, please continue to take time each day to read with your children, not just during Reading Week, but always. “The simplest way to make sure that we raise literate children is to show them that reading is a pleasurable activity. And that means finding books they enjoy, giving them access to those books, and letting them read them.” –Neil Gaiman
