This Week in Lower School 3/19-3/23, 2018

Friday, March 23, 2018
Passover is a special time where we remember not only the biblical story of Moses and Exodus but also the gift of family and togetherness. Students learned about this holiday through song, theater, research, and taking an active role in the Seders. This helps continue the tradition of Passover as a family event.

During our educational learning process of Passover, we saw a spiral growth from grade to grade. Our youngest preschool students (18 months and 2’s) experienced being part of the Passover story and seder. Our 3’s and JK students were able to help retell the story, and sing a small selection of Passover songs. View Preschool Seder photos.

During our K-1st grade Seder, we saw the growth of each grade level. Our Kindergarten students learned about the fourteen orders of the Seder. They were able to follow along in the Haggadot they made, including the 14 orders. Our K students were introduced to many new songs from the Haggadah, and they enjoyed joining in as our older students were leading those at the seder. First and Second grade was able to follow along in the actual Hagaddah leading us in blessings and songs. Our Second graders learned the full Passover story through experiential learning as they acted out the story in Hebrew and English. They performed their play on Shabbat last week.

Second, third, and fourth grade participated in a Seder completely led by the students. Our fourth graders led us through each order and narrated explanations of the things we do during the Seder. One of the focuses of third grade was B’chol dor vador. In every generation, everyone should see themselves as they left Egypt. The art project the third graders did was a mirror to symbolize that phrase from the Hagaddah.

5th grade participated in a student-led Seder with the 6th graders. In the learning process, the students each researched one part of the Hagaddah. They found multiple commentaries on why and how we do each part. They then created a presentation and shared it during our Seder. View K-5 Seder photos.

Our Lower School held their first Farmer’s Market on Wednesday after school. A variety of vegetables fresh from the garden were available to our community and were purchased by donation only. Those vegetables included mustard greens, snap peas, collards, rainbow chard, parsley, lettuce, radish, cauliflower, rosemary, sage, and a variety of kale. Following the Jewish tradition of giving to others,  a portion of the donations will be donated to charity. A huge thank you to the Garden Club and the PTO for making this event a success. We look forward to the next Farmer’s Market. View Farmers Market photos.

TECHNOLOGY
4th grade at AEC and 4th graders from Masha’abim school in Ramat Negev, Israel, are excited to be partners. This week our 4th graders designed luggage tags in tinkercad to print and send them as gifts. This week students downloaded their designs onto flash drives and took them down to the incubator to see their creations come to life. While in the Startup Incubator they got to see the laser cutter in action and cut an awesome fourth grade sign from gold paper!

CHOIR
