This week in Lower School 3/4-3/8, 2019

Friday, March 8, 2019
This year’s Reading Week theme was:  Find your Superpower: Read! In many ways throughout the week, we found our superpowers. On Monday, “Jewish Superheroes” day, we welcomed three panelists to our Middle and Upper School (a cantor, a poet, and a rabbi) who spoke about the ways in which their Jewish upbringing and ideals have influenced their careers and life choices. Tuesday was “Green Superheroes” day, during which our Lower School students engaged in story time in the garden followed by a planting session with PTO volunteers. Wednesday was our dress-up day (“Career Day”) in celebration of “Community Heroes” day, during which we hosted a panel of three community heroes (a therapy dog team, a registered nurse, and a corrections officer) who shared with our Lower School students the duties in their daily lives and how their roles support our community.
Thursday was “I am my Own Superhero” day, and we welcome to the school local author/illustrator Daria Peoples-Riley who presented her book This is It to JK-5th grade students. Ms. Daria spoke about the power of autonomy, self-reliance, and the importance of following your passion. The week culminated on Friday, when we celebrated “Reading Superheroes” day with therapy dogs as Reading Buddies, cross-divisional buddy activities, and Super Sessions, which were a variety of STEAM workshops lead by AEC faculty as well as parent volunteers. Other highlights throughout the week include preschool baking day, the kindergarten field trip to the Summerlin Library, and guest author and current LV Poet Laureate Vogue Robinson, who presented to the Middle and Upper School. It has truly been an exhilarating week, and we have all emerged as Reading Superheroes.
We would like to thank our volunteer readers- parents, friends, and older students- it has been a pleasure watching you interact with the LS students.
Wishing you a Shabbat Shalom and a nice long weekend,
Lilach Bluevise and the Lower School team
