This Week in Lower School 4/1-4/5, 2019

Friday, April 5, 2019

Today, Lower School students celebrated Good Deeds Day, part of a global movement started in Israel to encourage students to aid their communities.  This is the third annual Good Deeds Day at AEC. On this day, we are celebrating the passing of the Tikkun Olam leadership role from the fifth graders to the fourth graders. In a moving ceremony the fourth graders said a Tikkun Olam pledge and shared how ready they are for this role: they led the school in a Tikkun Olam dance and shared their service projects throughout the year. After Shabbat the entire K-5 community was engaged in Tikkun Olam projects led by the fifth graders. The fifth grade students planned Pesach-themed crafts for each grade level. As Tikkun Olam Ambassadors, they led each grade level in creating these crafts to be sold at our Passover Seder Shuk (Israeli market).  All proceeds will go to Make-A-Wish Foundation. Our fourth graders led the baby bears/pandas and 2s in their Shabbat service. We also celebrated Rosh Chodesh Nissan by baking challot. Today each student baked two challot (one to take home and one for donating to families in need). VIEW GOOD DEEDS DAY PHOTOS

First Grade Fairy Tale Performance
The first grade has just completed a unit on fairy tales.  They read many fairy tales such as: Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack & the Beanstalk, The Three Little Pigs, and The Little Red Hen. While reading, they focused on story elements that occur in every fairy tale like the good and evil characters, problem & solution, the special number and magic element, as well as the special beginning and ending. After reading traditional tales, students turned their attention to several fractured fairy tales. The students were then motivated to create their very own fairy tales in writer’s workshop and included all of the important elements in their masterpieces.  In technology, students created the setting of their story and characters using the Scratch coding program to make the character come to life. Parents enjoyed a reader’s theater on Thursday where small groups of students performed fractured fairy tale plays. The program concluded with the first graders singing the Hebrew fairy tale song, “Leeheeyot eetcha beagadot.” VIEW FAIRY TALE PERFORMANCE PHOTOS |   WATCH THE FAIRY TALE PERFORMANCE VIDEO

JK Field Day
Our Junior Kindergarten had the opportunity to display their athletic skills during their Field Day on Thursday morning.  The stations included an obstacle course, soccer game, giant Jenga, plastic egg and spoon relay, musical dots, and the classic sack race. Thank you to our senior class for taking the time to plan and manage this thoughtful event for our JK students. VIEW JK FIELD DAY PHOTOS
