This Week in Lower School 4/29-5/3, 2019
Lower School Team
Friday, May 3, 2019
Our Junior Kindergarten students wrapped up their year long friendship and chessed experiences with the Class of 2019 seniors today as they surprised them with a song during the Senior Siyyum ceremony. Afterwards, the class of 2019 and the class of 2032, gathered together for hugs, laughs, and a group picture.
Fifth graders will learn about the Holocaust through the eyes of two survivors. The book, I Wanted To Fly Like A Butterfly, deals with the personal and family story of Hannah Gofrit. Through the family story, we also learn about the wider story of the Holocaust, in a manner suited to the age of the students. At the same time, Esther Morgenstern, Mrs. Oshins’ aunt, shares her story through video interview. As a young woman, Esther spent months in the Lodz Ghetto only to be deported to several concentration camps. Students will discover the hope, traditions, and righteous among the living that helped both of these women survive, reunite with their family members, and move on to live happy, fulfilling lives.
Anne Frank Exhibition
Our fifth graders visited the meaningful exhibit called Reading and Writing with Anne Frank. The exhibit explains what was it like for Anne Frank during World War Two and how important reading and writing was for her. The exhibition provides an overview of the personal life of the Frank family. In addition the exhibition zooms in on Anne’s writing talent. Anne's Story Book and beautiful sentences book were introduced to the students. We connected Anne’s writing to express our own personal feelings, for example, Anne wrote: "The nicest part is being able to write down all my thoughts and feelings; otherwise, I’d absolutely suffocate.” The students expressed what they would do if they feel angry, sad or alone.
SeaQuest Field Trip
First grade kicked off their Ocean Unit this week by exploring SeaQuest Aquarium. We observed and were able to interact with many types of ecosystems, specifically marine life. We were able to learn about several species that live both in the water and on land. Students were given a choice if they wanted to pet sea sponges, starfish, stingrays, turtles, sharks, and were even able to feed the fish. Some of us learned to be brave and pet animals we would typically be afraid of. The biggest lesson we learned is that our ocean life, and many other habitats around the world, are in danger.
K-5th grade had their final Rosh Chodesh challah bake of the school year on Friday. Our students have learned many ways to roll and braid their challah over the course of the school year. Thank you to all of the families who sponsored the challah bakes this school year. Additionally, thank you to the PTO for bagging and distributing the challah from each challah bake.
