Welcome back! After a relaxing two weeks of Spring Break, our students are back in the swing of things with a week dedicated to remembrance and doing good deeds. Students have gone above and beyond with Tikkun Olam focused activities, giving them the opportunity to take part in giving back to the community.
Our students took part in Good Deeds Day on Friday. Good Deeds Day is part of a national movement, encouraging students to aid their global community. Our students picked causes to support, raising funds for CASA and the ASPCA. CASA is an organization which provides voices and advocates for foster children. Their goal is to help make sure Nevada’s children are placed in safe and welcoming homes. The ASPCA is the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, an organization which focuses on ending animal cruelty and animal homelessness.
Students supported these organizations through projects such as making collars and food bowls for dogs for the ASPCA, arts and crafts for CASA children, and more. These activities were all planned by the 5th grade; our leaders in Tikkun Olam.
The 4th grade has worked hard this year in supporting the Make-A-Wish Foundation with activities such as dreidel spinning during Hanukkah and organizing dress up days. They used the role models provided by the 5th graders as the leaders of Tikkun Olam at AEC, and they are now ready to pledge as the new leaders of Tikkun Olam for next year. During our Good Deeds Assembly, the 4th graders said the Tikkun Olam pledge and accepted their duties as active leaders.
They were treated to a surprise visit to the Make a Wish Foundation of Southern Nevada, where they volunteered with the help of some of their parents. We are thankful to the Garin Family and Alexa for inspiring them to support the Make a Wish Foundation.
"We told everyone about Good Deeds Day and it was really fun when they surprised us to go to the Make a Wish headquarters. It was so much fun because we got to make posters for people in need and we got a tour of the place and it was really fun the whole day!
-Joseph Penso, 4th Grade
"I think Good Deeds Day is a good day because you’re doing good deeds and making other people happy."
-Niv Kaufman, 4th Grade
This week in Discovery Lab, Kindergarten used Lego Education to create a complex machine. Working together with a partner, or group of three, students worked together to find specific pieces and assemble them according to detailed instructions found in their Lego books. They used their problem solving, perseverance, and teamwork skills to make some amazing machines! No one gave up and everyone had fun working and supporting one another.
We will continue our mitzvahs this Sunday at our Camp for Good event! Families are invited to join us for events supporting Aishel Avraham, a local non-profit organization that provides basic food necessities for families in need. The event will begin at 10 AM and wrap up at 12 PM. The swimming pool will be open and we hope you all enjoy the special pizza lunch which will be provided. Please see the flyer for more information, and RSVP to firstname.lastname@example.org with the total number of attendees for your group and any special dietary needs.
