This Week in Lower School 5/8 - 5/12, 2017

Friday, May 12, 2017

It’s been a busy week in the Lower School!
As part of their curriculum on Native Americans, our third graders explored the Clark County Museum in Henderson.  They learned about the early Native Americans who lived in the Las Vegas area and saw their homes and artifacts.  They also saw homes from the 20's, 30's, and 40's, explored the museum to see what this area was like long ago and got to walk through a railroad station and caboose.
Third grade has been making their way across the United States region by region this school year.  As part of their study of the Southwest Region, they focused on the Navajo tribe.  This week our students had the experiential opportunity to make traditional Navajo fry bread.  The smells traveled down the hallways and the students enjoyed getting a taste of one of the tribe’s famous delights.
Second grade went on a field trip to the Nevada State Museum.  Students were able to experience dinosaur fossils, which included a mammoth, and ichthyosaur and many land and ocean animals in a hands-on manner.  They also got to experience The First Peoples and fur trappers through a variety of examples on display.  Early Nevada artwork was observed and discussed as well as the importance of mining for gold, silver and copper.  They tied their visit to their unit on symbols by viewing the Nevada State Seal and discussing what it represents to our state.  They had a great time and learned many new things!
Baby bears had their end of the year celebration with families this morning.  It was so much fun for our youngest students to share what they have learned and how much they have grown throughout the year.
Fifth graders participated in a right of passage this morning, in a moving ceremony where they were presented with a Tanakh.  During their Move Up ceremony, our fifth graders shared the impact their Tikkun Olam projects and programs have had on them.  We have enjoyed watching them grow and further develop into young people who care so much about the world around them.  We are very proud of our fifth graders and are excited to see all of the amazing things they do as they transition into middle school.  Watch the amazing slideshow showcasing the 2016-2017 Fifth Grade Class.
At the end of the day, today, our entire lower school was treated to an ice cream party, compliments of Anderson Dairy!  We would like to thank Sabrina, Aiden and Ethan Robertson’s grandparents for their thoughtful, generous and delicious donation of ice cream and all the works!  What a special treat!
