This Week in Lower School 8/28-9/1, 2017
Lower School Staff

Students working and learning together is one of the many aspects that makes our school so special. This week we got to see the start of our clubs, exciting projects connecting Math and STEM. We announced our new Lower School garden and we will also be embarking on a huge drive to benefit students of Jewish schools affected by Hurricane Harvey. This is being led by our 5th grade students. Choir for grades 3-5 will begin on Friday, September 8th with Ms. Lucy.
On Tuesday our 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders had their first club meeting. Most clubs have students from all three grades. In Journalism Club multiple grade levels work together on becoming ace news hounds. Clubs like Art have Middle School leaders and mentors. Middle Schoolers explained to their fellow student artists how to be good members of the club, and even had a lesson planned around watercolor painting and a small competition. See all the Club descriptions with photos, click here.
5th graders kicked off their Mini Metric Olympics on Friday in their STEAM class. As part of their study of metric measurement, students participated in five events: Paper Plate Discus, Cotton Ball Shot Put, Plastic Straw Javelin, Sponge Squeeze, and Marble Grab. Students practiced estimating and measuring grams, milliliters, and centimeters. After competing in just one event, students saw their estimations quickly become much more precise!
Back to School Night for the K-5th families was a great success. Thank you for coming and seeing what your students experience here at school and in their classrooms.

JOIN US FOR OUR LOWER SCHOOL HURRICANE HARVEY DRIVE
Tikkum Olam is a major value in our school and a responsibility our students are proud of. As such, our students have been inspired to initiate a drive to aid students of Jewish schools in the Houston area. Please consider donating school supplies, books, board games, Hebrew items, etc. Financial donations will also be accepted. We would like to support more than one Jewish school.
Donations can be dropped off in the Lower School Lobby.
