Back to School Nights
Thank you to all of the parents who joined us virtually for our Back to School Nights this week. Although in a virtual setting, we achieved the same goals as always of highlighting the educational work and sharing the structure and philosophy that drives the educational process here at AEC. Please reach out to your child’s teacher if you were unable to attend the session. They will be able to share the recording/slides or answer any questions that you may have.
Each week, we will highlight a specific grade level and a special in the Lower School. It is our goal to give a snapshot of the many wonderful things that are happening in all of our grade levels and specials.
Third Grade Highlights:
All three third grade classes are learning about using a storyteller’s voice in Writers’ Workshop. We are discussing how a storyteller’s voice shows vs. tells. In their own personal narratives, they are working on learning to include descriptions of actions that take place, describing images, using dialogue, and describing what they saw, smelled, tasted, or felt. Third graders have also been working hard reviewing important addition and subtraction concepts in math, playing around with place value games and problem solving with missing addends. Students are already showing some great work habits and eagerness to learn more!
Physical Education Highlights:
This year PE looks a little different than we’re used to, but the students are working hard & having fun! We are still able to utilize the track and gym for a physically distanced warm up, stretching & games. We have begun the Lower School Olympics where each student in grades K-5 is given a country to represent and have been competing in different events to earn points! Events include a sprint, running long jump, softball throw and endurance run. During these events, students are working on the gross motor skills of balance, coordination, body awareness, and strength. Students learned about proper running, throwing, and jumping form to maximize their results. The body motion for each event was broken down and analyzed to help our students understand which parts of the body create and execute the desired movements. Our students are working hard while maintaining a healthy competitive spirit.
Preschool Movement Highlights:
Our Preschool students are having a blast in movement. Students are learning and creating fun warm up and cool down exercises as part of their movement class routines. We have started the year off with practicing fundamental ball skills. The balls used in movement class are sanitized before each class and students are given their own individual ball. Our Baby Bears and Pandas are learning and practicing rolling and kicking balls. Our 2s classes have been learning to kick and stop balls with their feet and hands. The 3s classes have been learning to dribble balls with their hands and feet, while the Junior Kindergarten work on shooting basketballs into a mini hoop and learning to toss and catch lighter activity balls. It has been wonderful to see our students exercise and work together while practicing these skills.
